The emerging talent of Yuko Moriyama can be seen in her debut
exhibition Water Spirits, a series of large-scale waterscapes.
Yuko chose to take a temporary career break from architecture to
concentrate on her drawing, which originated during her time as a
student at the Architectural Association ten years ago.
Her highly emotive drawings deal with the meditative, spiritual
and symbolic nature of water. Sourced from visits to Hamstead
Ponds, they form part of a living evolving synthesis of works.
Moriyama's images have a mesmerising visual quality: silent
gradations of velvety graphite layered with swirling lines
occasionally illuminated by swathes of diffused colour. She plays
masterfully with the visual depth of the surface allowing the
viewer a moment of personal reflection.
Yuko Moriyama was born in Japan 1064 and came to Britain at the
age of fourteen. Since graduating from the Architectural Association
in 1989 she has worked in architectural practices in Japan, Dublin
and London.
